Installation

Get Typora from v2.typora.io.

System requirements

PlatformRequiresDownload
macOSmacOS 13 or later.dmg
WindowsWindows 10 version 1809 or later, x64 or ARM64, with the WebView2 runtime.zip
Linuxx64 or arm64AppImage, .deb or .tar.gz

macOS

Open the .dmg and drag Typora to Applications. Keep it there: Quick Look and the command line tool expect it.

Typora registers as an alternative app for Markdown. To open .md files in it by default, select one in Finder, choose File ▸ Get Info, set Open with to Typora and click Change All….

Settings ▸ General ▸ System Integration installs Quick Look, the command line tool and Finder Services.

Windows

Typora for Windows is a .zip with no installer. Unzip it to a folder you keep, such as %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Typora, and run Typora.exe.

  • WebView2 ships with Windows 11 and current Windows 10. If Typora can't start, install the WebView2 Runtime.
  • Command line: add the folder to your PATH to use typora.
  • File association: Typora doesn't register itself for .md files. Right-click one, choose Open with ▸ Choose another app, and browse to Typora.exe.
  • File Explorer: to add Open in Typora and New Markdown File to the right-click menu, install them in Settings ▸ General. Before you delete Typora's folder, uninstall them there: nothing else removes them.

Your settings live in %USERPROFILE%\.config\Typora, not next to the app, so they survive moving or replacing the folder.

Linux

Use whichever package suits your distribution:

sh
sudo apt install ./Typora-*.deb # Debian, Ubuntu
chmod +x Typora-*.AppImage # any distribution
./Typora-*.AppImage

The .tar.gz runs from wherever you unpack it. Packages install a desktop entry for Markdown files and typora:// links.

On Wayland, Typora uses Electron's defaults. To ask for native Wayland, or to work around a GPU problem, pass Chromium switches on the command line:

sh
typora --ozone-platform=wayland
typora --disable-gpu

Spell checking on Linux uses dictionaries from language packs.

Pandoc

Word, EPUB, LaTeX and other formats use Pandoc, installed separately.
