Export and Import

File ▸ Export lists your export options. Each option is a profile with its own settings, managed in Settings ▸ Export and Publish (or File ▸ Export Setting…).

Formats

FormatNeeds PandocMain options
PDFPaper size (A3, A4, A5, Letter, Legal, Tabloid or custom), margins, page break between top-level headings, header and footer, author, extra HTML
HTMLOutline sidebar, embed images as Base64, extra content for <head> and <body>
HTML (without Styles)Plain semantic HTML; same options without the sidebar
ImageWidth (default 640 px), quality, font size; PNG or JPG
Word (.docx)✓Style reference document
OpenOffice (.odt)✓Template
Epub✓Custom CSS, chapter level in the outline
RTF, LaTeX, Media Wiki, reStructuredText, Textile, OPML✓Extra Pandoc arguments

PDF, HTML and image export are built in. The others use Pandoc 2.0 or later; Typora finds it automatically, or you can set Pandoc Path in Settings ▸ Export and Publish ▸ General.

Header and footer text in PDF can use ${title}, ${author}, ${pageNo}, ${totalPages} and ${today}. With Read and overwrite settings from YAML front matter on, a document's front matter can override PDF and HTML options.

More export options

Settings ▸ Export and Publish ▸ Add Export Option adds profiles from templates:

  • PDF (LaTeX / Pandoc) — PDF through a LaTeX engine (xelatex, lualatex, tectonic…) with your own template.
  • Markdown (Other Spec) — convert to Pandoc Markdown, PHP Markdown Extra, MultiMarkdown, original Markdown, CommonMark or GFM, with wrapping, reference links and heading style options.
  • Pandoc — any Pandoc output format.
  • Native (Pandoc) — Typora's Pandoc AST, for your own Pandoc pipeline.
  • Custom — run your own shell command, with a save dialog if you want one.

You can rename, reorder and delete the profiles you add. You can also add another copy of a built-in format, for example a second PDF profile with different paper.

After export

Each profile can open the exported file, open its folder, or run a command (for example git add "${outputPath}") and show its output. Settings ▸ Export and Publish ▸ General sets the default folder for exports: automatic, next to the current file, or a custom location.

File ▸ Export with Previous repeats the last export, and Export and Overwrite with Previous writes to the same file again without asking.

Install Pandoc

PDF, HTML and image export need nothing extra. Everything else, including import, uses Pandoc 2.0 or later:

PlatformInstall
macOSbrew install pandoc, or the installer from pandoc.org
Windowswinget install pandoc, or the installer from pandoc.org
Linuxsudo apt install pandoc, or your distribution's package

Typora finds it automatically. If it doesn't, set Pandoc Path in Settings ▸ Export and Publish ▸ General.

Diagrams, math and extensions in export

Exports use the same rendering as the editor: highlighted code, MathJax math (as SVG by default), diagrams, citations and bibliography, and fences rendered by extensions.

Import

File ▸ Import… converts a document to Markdown with Pandoc and opens it as a new, untitled document. Supported: Word (.docx), OpenDocument (.odt), RTF, LaTeX (.tex, .latex, .ltx), reStructuredText, Org, MediaWiki / DokuWiki, Textile, OPML and EPUB. Dropping such a file on the window imports it too (Settings ▸ Control ▸ When Dropping Files).

Print

File ▸ Print… prints the current document; File ▸ Page Setup… chooses the paper.

From the command line

typora export runs the same export from a terminal, without opening a window:

sh
typora export notes.md notes.pdf
typora export -r docs -d site # a whole folder tree as HTML
typora export report.md -p docx

See Command Line.
